Day of Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar. Today is celebrated as a tribute to the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad who was killed at the battle of Karbala in 61 AH (680). By the coming of the day of Ashura, Shiite Muslims held a ritual usually bloody up hurting their own bodies with whips and knives.
